Mitigating Fume Spread

Fire stations can be extremely busy places and when there’s a fire locally, people need to be on the move quickly. Overhead Door Company of Albuquerque came to the rescue of some local fire stations to help them keep fire truck fumes from spreading into the living quarters of their barracks.

The fire station regularly has running trucks in the bay, which created exhaust fumes. With regular traffic in and out of the bay area, the exhaust often wafted beyond the bay and into the barracks. Obviously this put occupants at risk, and something had to be done. The solution was to create a vestibule with a glass ceiling. This allowed for the fumes to be drawn in and captured there instead of emitting directly into the barracks.

In order to support the load of a glass ceiling, Overhead Door Company of Albuquerque recommended installing a storefront product with tempered glass. So far, the Company has installed four of these units in two fire stations with plans to implement the same solution in other nearby stations by the end of the year.
